The then pro-progressive and young Muslim League leaders were established at the initiative of the political workers' conference, the first Pakistan's main opposition party East Pakistan Awami Muslim League. Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani was elected the first council and Shamsul Haque became the general secretary. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the joint committee member of the first committee.The second council of the party was held in Mymensingh in 1953. Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani became the president and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected general secretary. Awami League became a non-communal organization in the third council session of Rupomahal Cinema Hall of Sadarghat, Dhaka on 21-23 October 1955. The party's new name was East Pakistan Awami League. President of All Pakistan Awami Muslim League, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy raised this proposal. Later, Maulana Bhashani and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib were elected as president and general secretary of the council session.
