The country's shrimp sector has a huge potential. It is possible to achieve more growth in this sector if the yield of every acre is increased and the quality of the production of shrimp is ensured.
The discussion was organized by the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) and Solidaridad Network Asia in the city's Sonargaon Hotel on Sunday, in the workshop titled 'Rich prospects of shrimp sector in national development and development of Bangladesh'.The negotiators said that to maintain the dynamics in this sector, emphasis should be given on providing necessary infrastructure investment, good acquisition practices, disease-free seeds and good quality food fisheries. Besides, the quality of shrimp improvement, reliable e-traceability system and third party certification must be introduced to increase product competitiveness in the international market.Syed Mahmudul Haque, chairman of Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation, highlighted the contribution of BSF in this sector with e-traceability as a pilot project in the country's shrimp sector. Salim Reza Hassan, Country Manager of Solidaridad Network Asia, described the challenges of marketing this sector, including their 'Shafal Project' activities.In the workshop held in the chairmanship of Syed Mahmudul Haque, Chairman of Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation, Commerce Secretary Shubashish Bose was the chief guest. Netherlands Ambassador to Bangladesh Leonid Margeretha Kuilainar, Director General of Fisheries Department Syed Arif Azad and Foreign Ministry Wing Director General Mohammad Khorshed Alam Khastagir were present as special guests.
