43.33 percent of the people in the country, 4 crore 13 lakh adults used to take tobacco.According to the World Health Organization, due to the use of tobacco products, about 1.2 million people are suffering from lethargic 8 diseases, including heart, lung, and mouth cancer, stroke, and long-term lung diseases. Of these, 3,82,200 people lost their lives every year, whose medical expenditure was more than twice the revenue earned from tobacco products.He presented this information at a seminar on tobacco-development interventions organized in the auditorium of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Building, Dhanmondi on Tuesday.The State Minister said the representatives of local government organizations will be involved in anti-tobacco movement. The government has taken initiatives to tax the tobacco products properly. Considering the severity of tobacco, the World Health Organization has formulated the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the International Tobacco Control Agreement, that Bangladesh has signed and ratified. The government has declared phases of tobacco erosion in phases by 2040.
