‘BNP might have more bad intention to foil city polls’

“BNP wanted to withdraw from the election race by killing people. But they didn’t get that scope as the law- enforcement agencies were active and vigilant and the people were cautious about security of the common man,” she said.

The Prime Minister said this while exchanging greetings with Buddhist religious leaders and distinguished persons of the community on the occasion of Buddha Purnima at her official Ganobhaban residence in the capital city this afternoon, reports BSS.

Religious Affairs Minister Principal Motiur Rahman, State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, President of CHT Bouddha Bhikkhu Sangha Srimat Proggyananda Mahathero, Chairman of Bangladesh Bouddha Krishti Prachar Sangha Srimat Shuddhananda Mahathero spoke on the occasion.

Vice-Chairman of Bouddha Religious Welfare Trust Sajal Kumar Talukdar gave the welcome address.

Sheikh Hasina said that BNP did the same thing in the city corporation polls as they did in their anti-government movement.

The Prime Minister said BNP did everything by announcing to participate in the elections, but they were not in the field. "They were not in the field, there was no representative ... there was no agent (of theirs). All of a sudden they boycotted the election just three hours after the voting started on the election day," she said.

She said jealousy, hatred and vengeance never bring any welfare for the people. "But it is unfortunate that BNP-Jamaat committed such offences for three months since January 5," she said.

Issuing a strong warning against such crimes, Sheikh Hasina said her government is taking stern action against those who are involved in burning people to death and torching and vandalizing public and private property. "Proper action must be taken against those who were involved in arson and subversive acts," she said.
