Chief election commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said the elections to the Dhaka north, Dhaka south, and Chittagong city corporations were free and fair and took place in a festive mood.
"I have visited some polling centres. Vote casting was free and fair. I also spoke with some voters who were pleased about the peaceful atmosphere there," said CEC during a press conference at the EC secretariat in the evening.
He also thanked all the election officials to make the city election a success.
CEC said most of the polling centers had peaceful atmosphere as no complaint of violence was reported by the officials or polling agents.
He also said that some of the foreign diplomats said the election was fair after they visited a number of polling centres.
He said vote casting was stopped at some centres after news of violence was reported there.
He said the law enforcement agencies will be in the field for another day to tackle any untoward situation following the elections.
